Welcome to the 78th Humormeister's Forum edition

How many times do you laugh in a day? Kids, up to age 5, laugh up to 400 times a day. Adults, over the age of 30, are lucky to average 3 - 5 times a day.

What has happened to society? Everywhere I look on the street, public transportation, malls, stores, restaurants, almost everyone is busy with two thumbs on an electronic gadget.

We don't talk, we don't laugh anymore. If we keep this up, we will lose our ability to conduct any face to face communication.

I would love to hear you comments on this. You can send your comments to my email address at humorlaughter@telus.net

I'd rather laugh with the sinners, than cry with the saints - Billy Joel

The 1 Minute laugh

Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business.

Several members did not approve of her extra-curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.

She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new church member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon.

She emphatically told Frank, and other church members, that everyone seeing the truck there she knew what he was doing.

Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned around and walked away. He did't explain, defend, or deny.

Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his truck in front of Mildred's house, walked home....and left his truck there all night.

( You gotta love Frank )

Kids are funny!

It was that time during Sunday morning service for the children's sermon. All the children were invited to come forward.

One little girl was wearing a particularly pretty dress and as she sat down, the minister leaned over and said, "That's a very pretty dress. Is it your Easter dress?"

The little girl replied, directly into the minister's clip-on microphone, "Yes, and my mom says, it's a bitch to iron!"

How to have more laughter in your life

When was the last time you laughed? If you're having problems remembering, then close your eyes and think of something funny that happened to you recently, or that you might have witnessed. Do this before reading on.......

What happened? You may have noticed some or all of these:

  • Your face broke out into a gentle smile
  • Your eyes "crinkled" up as they do when you smile
  • Some of you may have taken a deep breath at the same time

My point is that a smile and perhaps even a giggle is only a memory away .However, there is a lot more happening beneath this experience than what you might have have realized.

Recent research by Lee S Berk, of Loma Linda University suggests that just the anticipation of 'mirthful laughter' boosts our 'feel good' hormones - the endorphins by almost 30%.

The good news is, even if you don't understand the joke you just heard, the mere anticipation that it might be funny is enough to give your spirits a boost.
